About him

Carlos Eduardo Hernández, professionally known as Loscar Hernando, Los is a Mexican American contemporary mixed media artist based in Indianapolis, Indiana. Emerging in the early 2020s, Hernando has developed a distinctive visual language that blends Neo-Expressionism, Pop Art, and mixed media. His work explores themes of identity, mental health, human connection, love, and Mexican cultural heritage. Through expressive color, layered compositions, and emotional symbolism, he transforms personal experiences into works that encourage empathy, resilience, and hope.

Early Life & Artistic Journey

Hernando began his artistic journey between 2021 and 2023. What started as a personal outlet for coping with depression, anxiety, and self-discovery gradually evolved into a professional artistic practice. Painting became more than a creative pursuit—it became a form of therapy, allowing him to process emotions and communicate experiences that words alone could not express.

Working under the name Loscar Hernando, he continues to use art as a platform for mental health awareness while encouraging others to embrace creativity as a source of healing and self-expression.

Artistic Style & Vision

Loscar Hernando’s work combines the emotional intensity of Neo-Expressionism with the bold visual language of Pop Art and mixed media. His paintings celebrate humanity, compassion, and the importance of caring for one another. They also reflect the influence of his Mexican heritage, drawing inspiration from the richness of Mexican music, food, family traditions, and dance.

His art is rooted in optimism and authenticity. Every piece represents a chapter of his personal journey, transforming struggles with mental health into messages of resilience, acceptance, and hope. By sharing his own experiences, Hernando aims to create artwork that offers viewers a sense of comfort, belonging, and emotional connection.

Community & Public Art

Beyond the studio, Loscar actively seeks opportunities to connect with the Indianapolis community. He regularly visits downtown Indianapolis to event of gallery 317 and Blaxk wolf collective including neighborhoods such as Mass Ave and Fountain Square, where he shares his artistic presence through his “My heART” stickers and engages with the city’s growing creative culture. His goal is to make art more accessible while building meaningful connections within the local arts community.

and he cares for loving others to be loved as well and not to be hurt and be hated and nor stopping love and he brings happiness to his life with music and his self to his friends as well

Music as Creative Inspiration

Music plays a central role in Hernando’s creative process. A dedicated collector of CDs, cassette tapes, and vinyl records, he draws inspiration from the improvisational spirit of jazz, the storytelling of hip-hop, and the emotional depth of R&B and soul music.

While painting, he enters an immersive creative mindset where rhythm, melody, and emotion influence each brushstroke. This relationship between music and visual art gives his work its expressive energy and emotional depth. Friends, mentors, and teachers have described his artistic process as joyful, imaginative, and deeply committed, recognizing both his creativity and his passion for continuous growth.

The Heart Symbol

Loscar Hernando is recognized for creating expressive characters with closed eyes, oversized noses, and exaggerated mouths featuring either prominent teeth or simple lips. Among the recurring symbols in his work, the heart has become one of his most recognizable motifs.

Inspired in part by the visual language of Keith Haring, Hernando revisited a heart design he first created when he began painting. Over time, he developed it into a personal symbol and signature element within his artistic practice.

The heart serves as a visual trademark, allowing viewers to immediately recognize his work. It represents the emotional complexity found throughout his art—love, vulnerability, fear, freedom, chaos, optimism, and the contradictions of the human experience.

Hernando has also expressed a desire to create a recurring self-inspired character, recognizable by oversized clothing and unconventional facial features. Although he has said he is still developing this idea, it reflects his ongoing commitment to building a unique visual identity.
